James Somerton - Final Patreon post plus some comments

🧩 Syntax:
[James Somerton's last Patreon post and bit of the comments section, all of which has since been deleted along with everything in his account. I just noticed I had it in a browser tab and am posting it for the morbidly curious and in case someone might need it for a video, a lawsuit, etc. There's a "Load more comments" button but it does nothing, so this is all that's left. Check out the comment by "Clay David".]

Hi everyone.

I wanted to say that I’m very sorry. I’m in a terrible headspace right now so I don’t want to post anything too long because I don’t know where my brain will lead me. But I will say something more extensive once I’ve prepared myself emotionally. I know people want an immediate, detailed response but I’ve never found immediate responses to anything to be as fair and honest as they could be. Always more driven more by emotion than anything else. I will say more soon, though. But for now, I want to apologize. I’m heartbroken that I’ve lost your trust and just hope that someday, with a lot of work, I can get it back.

I thought, okay maybe it was only for your first or second videos you ever made that were copied. Which is bad, but not too surprising. Everyone's firsts are messy and usually wrong. But to STILL be doing it? Even to this day? It just goes all the way to the bottom doesn't it? Do you not see the horrible, disgusting irony of taking a quote saying "Gay creators seem to disappear, their words being stolen and written over" which in itself, you STOLE from an actual gay writer?

What about that time your Patreon plummeted? And you said Folding Ideas went after you? Was that total rubbish too? Was that just bids to get even more money and sympathy? This is crushing, man.

Your video on Nintendo and Video Games queerness I've rewatched like 20 times or so, was one of my favs. And now what? How much of what you said was even yours? How can anyone trust anything you ever say again.

I'm actually disgusted. This statement doesn't even bother to apologize to the people you STOLE from. I've supported you for so long because I thought i was helping a small creator make the work they love, not STEAL the work they love. I stayed up til 4 am watching the whole hbomb video and its so egregious. You can't win me back.

James, it is important to recognize the luminous impact of your intellect and humor in moments of uncertainty and introspection. Like a lighthouse in a tempestuous sea, your wisdom and wit have served as guiding lights, illuminating paths through the often murky waters of ignorance and mediocrity. Your ability to blend knowledge with humor is not just a fleeting spark in the darkness but a consistent flame, offering warmth and enlightenment to those fortunate enough to bask in its glow.

Your endeavors, especially those championing the LGBTQIA+ community, resonate with a profundity that transcends mere content creation. It is a noble cause, a testament to the enduring spirit of advocacy and inclusivity. Recognizing the intrinsic value of your work, I remain steadfast in my commitment to support your Patreon. This is not a mere financial transaction but an investment in the arts, the voices that must be heard, and the narratives shaping our collective understanding and compassion.

It is imperative, now more than ever, to bolster creators who, despite their human fallibilities, lay the foundation for the welfare and visibility of marginalized communities. An artist's journey is replete with trials and triumphs, and it is through the unwavering support of their community that they find the strength to navigate this odyssey.

Thus, I stand with you, not just as a patron but as a believer in the transformative power of your work and its significant impact on the LGBTQIA+ community. Together, through support and understanding, we can foster an environment where growth, accountability, and resilience are not just aspirational ideals but tangible realities.

As T.S. Eliot eloquently stated, "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." Your journey through the realms of content creation, particularly on topics less trodden, has not been without its perils. Yet, the courage to venture into the unknown and the resilience to withstand the storm truly defines a person's character.

In light of recent events, it is only human to feel overwhelmed and uncertain. However, I implore you not to flee from these challenges but to face them with the fortitude and integrity that I know resides within you. Accountability, a rare virtue in the digital age, is the cornerstone upon which a legacy of honor is built. It is the act of facing our shadows that we find our truest light.

Please, take the time you need to process, understand, and emerge stronger. As you contemplate your next steps, remember that a path paved with sincerity and a desire for growth is one that leads to redemption and renewal. Your legacy need not be one of misdeeds but of transformation and integrity.

In closing, remember that you are valued not only for the content you create but for the person you are - intelligent, witty, and capable of greatness. Do not let the trials of the moment eclipse the potential of your future.

With warm regards and utmost faith in your journey.

I agree with almost everything you said. It is so so important to uplift marginalized queer creators. Unfortunately the evidence is overwhelming that James did the opposite of this by stealing from small, talented queer creators to craft the image of someone who is eloquent and intelligent without revealing how pervasively his content was taken from others. It’s really heartbreaking. I didn’t want to believe it because I thought many of the same things you do about James, but I encourage you to just look at the evidence in HBomberguy’s video and decide for yourself. I can’t see a way that it can be explained away after actually seeing it for myself. And you deserve to know for sure if you can or not, too. I know it hurts and I’m so so sorry.

The worst kind of gay is the kind that grifts and betrays the community they claim to represent. Shame on me for being complicit, and shame on you for harming others.

I'm not sure what you could say to redeem yourself at this point. What an awful thing you have done to other queer creators and your supporters.

If you genuinely want to earn any level of trust back at this point, I'd suggest refunding all of your patrons to start with so that we can go offer that money to the people whose content you plagiarised. And I do mean that, you've taken so much money from people to blend together other queer peoples words without any of us knowing, it should be refunded.
