"CATEGORY A" AWARDS - WINNERS DETERMINED BY POINTS ON A 5-3-2 BASIS. FIRST PLACE VOTES IN PARENTHESIS LOU THESZ/RIC FLAIR AWARD (WRESTLER OF THE YEAR) Wrestler (First Place) Votes 1. Giulia (17) 199 10. Bryan Danielson 91 HONORABLE MENTION: Sami Zayn 89 As expected this turned into a two-person race with Moxley (Jonathan Good, 37) and former Shield partner Reigns (Leati Joseph Anoa’i, 37). The way I see the argument it comes down to Reigns as the biggest star of the year in pro wrestling, as WWE champion for the entire year and headliner on the biggest shows, during a year that got very strong for the company after April. He had good-to-great matches on top, which is a big part of the award. But the argument is Most Valuable. Reigns worked a very limited schedule and the company did roughly as well with him and not with him. The Smackdown ratings rise was as much tied to Sami Zayn and Jey Uso, who carried it to strong results when Reigns wasn’t around, as the weekly angle. Moxley was the more valuable, because he was twice, after injuries to Punk, called to lead the company. Had he been not around, the declines would have been greater than they were. Coming off rehab at the start of the year, he and Chris Jericho really carried the company during different periods when so many top names were out with injuries and later after All Out when Punk, Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks were suspended. You take both out of the picture in 2022, and it’s AEW that would be hurt far worse. Having previously won the award in 2020, joins Harley Race, Ric Flair, Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi, Jericho, John Cena, Hiroshi Tanahashi, A.J. Styles and Kenny Omega as the only two-time winners in history. Paddy Pimblett 87 HONORABLE MENTION: Amanda Nunes 75, Khamzat Chimaev 65 This ended up A very close race between Adesanya and Volkanovski, with Volkanovski actually getting the most first place votes. Adesanya, 33, was the biggest draw in the company with 1.6 million buys in three middleweight title matches, with wins over Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier and a loss to current champion Alex Pereira. Volkanovski, 34, was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter during the year, with featherweight title wins over Chan Sung Jung and his third win over Max Holloway. Volkanovski, who in February lost to Islam Makhachev when moving up to challenge for the lightweight title, ended 2022 with 22 wins in a row and a featherweight title reign that started with a win over Holloway on December 14, 2019. He had match of the year candidates in Japan, the U.S. and the U.K. He had three of the top ten matches of the year and five others that made honorable mention. He had more than ten times the number of first place votes as second place Danielson. Ospreay has finished in the top ten annually here and won for the second time, the first being 2019. He joins Ric Flair, Jushin Liger, Kenta Kobashi, Mitsuharu Misawa, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Danielson, Hiroshi Tanahashi, A.J. Styles and Kenny Omega as multiple-time winners. Aljamain Sterling 42 10. - - Volkanovski took first with wins over Chan Sung Jung and a dominant win over Max Holloway, his third over Holloway, who was an all-time great in the division. Pereira, 35, who won Fighter of the Year from MMA Fighting, MMA Junkie, Yahoo and ESPN, won three times, over Bruno Silva, Sean Strickland and Israel Adesanya. Volkanovski was dominant in his two fights, both against top competition. Pereira dominated his first two fights, but was on the verge of losing to Adesanya when he pulled out the fifth round knockout. Makhachev won twice, over Bobby Green, and the big win over Charles Oliveira via choke in the second round to win the lightweight title. FTR (782) 3,859 2. Mark & Jay Briscoe (54) 1,357 3. Young Bucks (38) 937 4. The Usos (40) 856 5. The Acclaimed (32) 708 6. Aussie Open 423 7. Penta El 0 M & Rey Fenix 175 8. Tam Nakano & Natsupoi 156 9. Hazumi & Koguma 98 10. Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland 86 FTR, the team of David “Dax” Harwood, 38, and Daniel “Cash” Wheeler, 35, were basically guaranteed winners with 14 times as many first place votes as second place Mark & Jay Briscoe. The two teams, due to their three match series on the first three ROH PPVs under the Tony Khan regime which all were match of the year candidates, finished 1-2 based on that. FTR during the year did the unprecedented, winning world tag team titles in three major markets, holding the AAA belts in Mexico, the IWGP belts in Japan (which they also defended in England) and the ROH belts. Jay Briscoe’s death came during the voting period but probably made no difference in their second place finish. All three of the Briscoes vs. FTR matches ranked among the best tag team matches ever held in the U.S., with the double dog collar match among the greatest, winning match of the year in a number of polls and placing second here. The Usos were the biggest star tag team as the dominant WWE tag champions, holding the Smackdown belts all year and the Raw belts for several months. They headlined a lot of big matches and for an MVP award for tag teams, they have the strongest argument for winning. But the three teams ahead of them had consistent incredible matches. Roman Reigns (9) 185 10. Will Ospreay (12) 164 Current AEW champion MJF (Maxwell Friedman, 26), had triple the first lace votes of Moxley. This made his second year in a row winning. His delivery and long-form storytelling using real life to intertwine with worked pro wrestling was reminiscent of previous winners like Ric Flair, Jim Cornette and Mick Foley. In the case of MJF, he used a lot of experiences as a kid, and as a teenager that were reality based to try to use for promos for his biggest matches. He joins Roddy Piper, Cornette, Flair, Steve Austin, The Rock, Foley, Chris Jericho, C.M. Punk, Paul Heyman and Conor McGregor as two-time winners. DDT 63 All Elite Wrestling won off the strength of its weekly Dynamite television show and quality of the PPV shows. The company also had multiple million dollar gates. But it was not as popular overall at the end of the year as it was at the beginning. Still, Dynamite beating Raw in live attendance in the early part of the year, and in PPV interest during the same months in the early part of the year was amazing considering one company is 13 times the size of the other. But Raw in the second half of the year was well above Dynamite in live attendance and WWE grew in almost every category, and in particular, the ratings over the course of the year saw increases for WWE late in the year while most of television fell, and declines for AEW, particularly for Rampage. Stardom had a major increase in popularity, and the idea of a women’s promotion being the second most popular promotion in a country with wrestling history of Japan is something that can’t be overstated how impressive that is. Dynamite dominated in highly ranked matches in almost every poll around, and no television show in the U.S. has emphasized great matches. It did increase from the prior year during a period when that is unusual in television and homes on cable declined greatly, but on the flip side aged older. It was well below Raw, but it also was top five in non-sports most weeks so ratings were strong. Smackdown was carried by the Sami Zayn/Bloodline angle. No other show was even competitive in the voting. Okada vs. Ospreay and FTR vs. Briscoes took up the first four spots, which was amazing considering this was a year filled with great matches and when the same match has two incarnations, or in the case of FTR vs. Briscoes, three, it normally would result in vote splitting that makes it difficult to win unless it’s something like a Flair-Steamboat or Omega-Okada year. It was Ospreay’s second win, the other being his 2019 match with Shingo Takagi. It was Okada’s fifth, winning in 2013 against Hiroshi Tanahashi, 2016 with Tanahashi, 2017 with Kenny Omega and 2018 with Omega. The win by Okada ties him with Mitsuharu Misawa and Kenta Kobashi with five career match of the year wins. Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels each have four. Tanahashi and Omega have three. And for the first six months of the year you can make the argument. But WWE and AEW as businesses were in the same position with one much larger but the clear-cut 1-2 in the world all year. However, it was WWE that grew all year while AEW did not do nearly as well in comparison over the last eight months. You can argue bad luck or injuries, but in a coach of he year award, one team doing so much better in comparison at the end as compared to the beginning, that coach is going to win. Injuries are part of the game and regrouping and rebounding from them are as well. A comparison of the promotion of the returns of Cody Rhodes, C.M. Punk and Kenny Omega is so greatly in one side’s favor. Yes, AEW did create an environment on television and PPV to have far more great matches, and while some of the WWE’s growth relates to the stadium shows, a lot also relates to the aura of Roman Reigns, which is a creative issue, and the Bloodline angle, which is booking, and the most effective long-term angle in years. While the angle got stronger in 2023 where it doesn’t count for this balloting, it was still the strongest in 2022. In addition, whether you are a fan of Bray Wyatt or not, that out of the box thinking building up his return was a huge short-term interest level success. Even if Paul Heyman and Reigns played a huge part in one story and Wyatt himself in the other, the overseeing guy is Levesque. Vince McMahon 16 This was notable because there were issues with so many candidates when it comes to winning. Khan’s major issue was the locker room issue which badly hurt the company, both in how it wasn’t handled months before the blow-up when all the warning signs were there, and how it was handled after it happened, basically not telling fans anything. For someone with a background in sports, where pretending it never happened on television and not mentioning names or doing even a basic explanation, especially when four people suspended had title belts, is tough. Still, I can see the complete not wanting to vote for White because of what happened on New Year’s Eve when he and his wife got in a slapping exchange. There are also questions regarding the Slap Fight promotion. With Vince McMahon, who was the man in charge of WWE much of the year, you couldn’t vote for him either. And then the nature of his return hurts the others in the company in that position. New Japan didn’t have a good enough year for business to win. Ogawa had the least baggage of the candidates but Stardom is also not high profile worldwide compared to WWE, UFC, AEW and NJPW.
