Telegram and WeChat Apply for Social Media Licenses, Says Teo Nie Ching: Hope Others Follow Suit Kuala Lumpur, Dec 27 – Social media platform providers are urged to register for the Application Service Provider license before its implementation on January 1, 2025. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that the application deadline is December 31. She commended Telegram and Tencent (WeChat) for initiating the necessary licensing processes to operate in Malaysia. “I thank Tencent and Telegram for their willingness to cooperate and comply with the regulations set by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). I hope other platforms will follow their example, as platforms intending to operate in Malaysia must adhere to these regulations,” Teo said during a visit to veteran actor S. Shadia, a 60-year-old stroke survivor, as part of a program by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). Support for the Entertainment Industry Teo also highlighted FINAS's goal to provide assistance to at least 100 industry practitioners next year. To date, 48 practitioners have already received aid aimed at alleviating burdens related to welfare and healthcare. “This support, which includes cash and food donations, is a gesture of appreciation for the contributions of industry practitioners and aims to strengthen our relationship with them,” she said. During the visit, Teo presented aid on behalf of SOCSO (Social Security Organization) and FINAS to Shadia, widely known for his role as "Ravi" in a popular comedy series. Creative Industry Contribution Program Teo also touched on the upcoming Creative Contribution Program set to launch on January 1, 2025. As of December 20, 6,981 active freelancers have registered under the program's "Matched Contribution Scheme 2.0."
