No canning videos spread viral on social media (Kulai, December 28) – The Terengganu state government carried out a public caning yesterday on a man convicted of committing illicit intimacy for the third time. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching stated that her ministry has not received any complaints regarding the exposure of the caning process on social media. She clarified, “If the court has issued an order prohibiting public exposure, the Communications Ministry would need to take action. However, at this time, we have not received any complaints about the circulation of photos or videos related to the caning on social media.” Teo, who is also the MP for Kulai, made this statement after attending a ceremony where RM10,000 was allocated to the Johor Southern Wong Clan Association. The funds will be used to install protective fencing at the general cemetery of the Senai Jiangxia Hall. She expressed confidence that social media platforms equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology would automatically detect and classify caning images as violent or explicit content. “However, the public must remain vigilant. Avoid clicking or forwarding any content related to ‘caning’ on social media out of curiosity. There’s a risk of downloading malicious software or falling victim to scams,” Teo cautioned.
